Pierre Durette
Exhibition 16th November - 15th January 2010
Opening: Thursday 18th November 2010 at 17:30
Exhibition synchronicité
On the 16th of November, the Montreal artist Pierre Durette will be showing a series of new works at the Atelier-galerie Alain Piroir. The show consists of two large lithographs and a series of etchings. Durette’s exhibit revisits genre works situating them somewhere between the Middle Ages and the world of science fiction. Within these worlds, miniature characters float and accumulate on a white background. The resulting jamming of lines evokes a meeting of worlds and from this jumble new cultures and religions emerge. According to Durette, this is a reflection on the evolution of threat and also the manufacturing of a new history.
The staging of time is central to Durette’s work. Between the grotesque lines and the mash up of centuries, the work revisits the idea of the traditional time line, mixing time, culture and tradition.
Pierre Durette is originally from the Matapedia valley and has a bachelor of visual and media arts from UQAM. His work has received numerous mentions and prizes and has been shown at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal as well as galleries in Ontario and Québec.
L’Atelier-galerie Alain Piroir is a studio and gallery space dedicated to the creation and the exhibition of contemporary printed works. Open since 2007, the gallery’s mandate is to support artists in their practice and to promote contemporary printed works in the larger public.
