Exposition habiter le monde

Notes de Gabrielle Desgagné-Duclos

Visible un mois durant à partir de février 2017, Habiter le monde constitue pour la sculpteur, peintre et graveur Stella Pace une seconde occasion depuis l’exposition Têtes en devenir (2009) de présenter son travail en estampe à l’Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir. L’artiste y propose un corpus inédit qui regroupe deux œuvres grand format — une longue frise monochromatique noire sur papier japon et un dessin au bâton à l’huile et crayon de plomb — ainsi qu’un diptyque mélangeant estampe, collage et peinture et plusieurs pièces d’une série de petites collagraphies et pastel gras sur papier noir.

À huit étages au-dessus de la rue, bien en retrait du mouvement qui anime les espaces de diffusion situés en bas, avenues Casgrain et de Gaspé, l’Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir offre aux artistes en estampe actuelle un cadre unique d’exposition. Accrochées dans l’espace même de travail des maîtres graveurs et des artistes qui fréquentent l’atelier, les œuvres s’y regardent en contexte, dans un côtoiement bienvenu avec les presses. Lieu de création et d’apprentissage, l’Atelier-Galerie est avant tout un espace vivant, habité, qui incarne bien l’approche artistique de Stella Pace, à l’opposé de la culture des apparences, honnête, ancré dans le faire et le senti.

L’exposition donne à voir le développement récent du travail sur papier de Stella Pace, qui paraît s’accomplir en cohérence avec sa production sculpturale antérieure, fortement marquée par la série sur bases de béton Peoples (2000-2015). Par la répétition d’un motif — le plus souvent forme humaine — à chaque fois singularisé par son exécution automatiste, l’effet d’accumulation expose, pour ainsi dire, la condition individuelle de l’existence humaine. Accomplissant son travail plastique par séries, l’artiste accumule, sélectionne, reprend et retravaille les motifs, les idées, les techniques ou les œuvres elles-mêmes, réalisant de la sorte une œuvre-trace où les pièces transpirent l’énergie investie dans leur création.

Depuis une dizaine d’années, le travail que Stella Pace consacre à l’estampe, bien qu’il s’accompagne du ralentissement de sa production en sculpture, conserve cet intérêt pour les méthodes déjà employées du collage et de l’assemblage. L’artiste approche couramment l’élément d’impression comme une œuvre en soi (et l’expose parfois comme telle, avec ou sans altération). Ses tirages, quant à eux, surtout des éditions limitées, sont le plus souvent appelés à devenir la matière de base pour un nouveau travail de construction, pictural ou installatif. Ainsi, l’impression est loin d’être une finalité pour Stella Pace, qui place le processus même de l’estampe au centre d’une exploration sculpturale.

Récemment, une résidence de formation à l’Atelier Graff lui a aussi donné envie d’investiguer davantage les possibilités du numérique — ce dont témoigne l’œuvre Un monde en soi (2016), une composition numérique réalisée en collaboration avec Claude Fortaich et imprimée en un seul exemplaire sur papier d’Arches. Fruit d’un travail considérable, l’œuvre réunit, dans une grille de plus de deux mètres de longueur, 154 estampes individuelles représentants des visages sombres, sur lesquels l’artiste est intervenue au bâton à l’huile rouge écarlate comme pour les annoter, en souligner les traits d’expression ou en matérialiser la force vitale1.

Hypnotique, Un monde en soi découle d’une approche plus systématique de la composition all over, plus méthodique que ce à quoi l’artiste nous a surtout habitué, à l’exemple du grand dessin Oppression exposé chez Piroir. Ces deux œuvres, grille ordonnée et réseau de lignes chaotique, engagent cependant à une conception de l’espace semblable, qui n’est pas sans rappeler les compositions plurifocales de Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) — un plasticien que l’artiste affectionne et dont l’œuvre tardive s’organise en phases selon un traitement de plus en plus nihiliste de l’espace de représentation, avec les « psycho-sites », les « sites aléatoires », les « mires » et les « non-lieux ».

Qu’ils évoluent dans un espace monochromatique noir, flottent sur le blanc du papier sali par les essuyages de la plaque d’impression, ou dans un enchevêtrement de lignes qui rapproche dans une même image des scènes éloignées, les personnages de Stella Pace habitent des paysages évanescents, emplis des vertiges que nous y projetons. Ces « réfugiés » appartiennent au monde et le monde fait partie d’eux ; lorsqu’ils ne sont pas carrément construits de béton, de fer et de paille, ils ont sur papier cette même apparence d’être faits de la matière du monde, d’être formés de la terre.

Dans un langage plastique toujours empreint de primitivisme, Habiter le monde permet à Stella Pace de poursuivre sa méditation autour de la figure humaine et de la thématique migratoire, en ajoutant à son lexique iconographique l’image de la maison — motif nouveau qui fait ici une apparition toute naturelle. Rappelant les constructions traditionnelles des civilisations anciennes, le carré simple de chacune est un univers clos à quatre dimensions, modelé à l’image de celui qui y a vécu. Aussi distinctes les unes des autres que les êtres traversant les paysages incertains de ses œuvres, ces maisons incarnent la fixation spatiale, l’ancrage ; le refuge que l’on a dû abandonner et qu’il nous faut retrouver afin de quitter l’errance et habiter le monde.

1 Simultanément à l’exposition chez Piroir, Un monde en soi et quelques autres pièces récentes sont exposées au centre d’artistes en art imprimé Zocalo. Membre associée de Zocalo, Stella Pace y a effectué un séjour de résidence en 2012. Elle a depuis participé à plusieurs expositions collectives du centre, ainsi qu’à deux projets de livres d’artistes.

Within the framework of its partnership with the Biennale internationale d’estampe contemporaine de Trois-Rivières (BIECTR), the Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir takes great pleasure in welcoming the Quebec artist Hélène Latulippe as artist-in-residence, as well as for solo exhibition.

Exposition Portées d’ombres ii

Ms Latulippe, was selected from amongst the artists exhibiting of the 9th BIECTR. Her solo exhibition will be held from September 6 to October 15, 2016 at the Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir. This exhition, which follows on from artist’s residency on May, 2016, will give the Montreal public the opportunity to discover a more complete body of the artist’s work and broaden the reach of the BIECTR.

Her constant exploration of the limits of printmaking, her marriage of various materials seen in her use of textiles, papers and in her installation works, has inspired to choose Hélène Latulippe. This event fits well with the common goals of BIECTR and AGAP, to promote the renewal and development of contemporary.

Biography


Michel Savage holds a diploma from the University of Ottawa’s Department of Visual Arts, where he studied painting with Edmund Alleyn and Richard Gorman from 1972 to 1976. In 1982, he travelled, studied, and exhibited in Spain, where he met the Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies at his studio in Campins. His work of visual creation follows a path that privileges a symbolist poetry of the image. Through a phenomenological exploration of abstracted forms and colour, the artist seeks the shortest route between the emotion and the sign.

Since 1975, the artist has held numerous exhibitions at galleries as well as at several academic and cultural institutions. He has lived and worked in Montreal since 1983.

Biography

Louis-Pierre Bougie was born in Trois-Rivières in 1946. He lives and works in Montreal. After studying the art of printing in Montreal, Bougie finishes his training in many studios, notably in France et the Atelier Champfleury where he learns lithography and at Lacourière et Frélault where he worked for 15 years and specialized in intaglio and etching. For many years he works and studies in France, Portugal, Poland, Ireland, Finland and New York. He founded Atelier Circulairewhich is an important actor in printmaking in Quebec. His works have often been exhibited in canadian, american and european galleries and are part of numerous public and private collections in Quebec, Canada, the United States and France.

Biography

François Morelli was born in Montreal. He completed a BFA at Concordia University in 1975 concentrating on drawing. He lived in the New York area from 1981 to 1991, and received an MFA in installation and performance art from Rutgers University in 1983. He has taught in universities and art schools since 1980, has received numerous grants and has exhibited his work locally and internationally since 1976. He has been professor at Concordia University since 1996 and part of the Joyce Yahouda Gallery in Montreal since 2006. In 1993 he was awarded the prix d'Excellence by la Biennale de dessin et d'estampe d'Alma and in 2007 received the Prix Louis Comtois from the Conseil des arts de la Ville de Montréal.

He pursues a trans-disciplinary practice (in drawing, installation, performance, print media and sculpture) often questioning the status of an artwork through its creative process and its reception. He is interested in notions of passage, circulation and transformation. His art often echoes a past action or event while examining relationships between artists, society and contexts.

Exposition VUES DE L’ESPRIT - VUES DU CIEL


Il n’est pas si loin le temps où les artistes concevaient leurs œuvres en faisant une osmose profonde entre esthétique et éthique. Ainsi du rapport qu’entretient Rutvanowska dans ses propres expériences liées aux religions et aux procédés techniques – des thèmes abordés, des lieux investis (Abbaye) ou de sa dernière production : gravures et livre d’artiste, en collaboration avec des écrivains sur la thématique des Péchés capitaux…

C’est notamment la position esthétique de l’artiste Jovhanna Rutvanowska, comme on peut s’en rendre compte par sa peinture et la réflexion qu’elle a développé à partir de son expérience et de son oeuvre qui conjugue diverses techniques et divers supports -, une œuvre multidirectionnelle. Dans laquelle la sensualité et la poésie font totalement corps. Toute peinture véhicule des valeurs esthétiques et des images ancrées dans l’inconscient social qui contribuent à changer le regard du spectateur. L’esthétique permet de renouveler le champ de l’universalité des rapports des artistes aux formes de la cité.

Jovhanna Rutvanowska traverse ainsi tous ces courants à sa manière, en les réinterprétant à sa manière, en les actualisant, comme on peut s’en rendre compte.

À travers ses quarante ans de métier en tant que maître imprimeur et éditeur, il a acquis une expertise qui englobe tous les procédés en arts imprimés. À travers ses activités pédagogiques et son rôle de diffuseur, Alain Piroir, spécialiste en art imprimé, souhaite promouvoir l’estampe actuelle. Sa galerie offre au public l’occasion exceptionnelle de découvrir l'estampe actuelle dans son contexte de création. Les expositions sont présentées dans l’atelier, aux côtés des presses où le public pourra observer les imprimeurs et les artistes à l’oeuvre. On peut suivre la création d’une œuvre du début jusqu’à la fin. Depuis toujours son atelier est lieu de rencontre. Il aime partager sa passion et promouvoir l’art imprimé au Québec et ailleurs. Son engagement pour ce médium et pour l’art visuel sous-tend toute ma carrière de maître imprimeur.

En 1974, il obtient son diplôme national des Beaux-Arts en France. L’année suivante, il ouvre de son premier atelier personnel à Paris. En 1977, il se place en tant qu’éditeur d’estampes et de livres d’artiste en plus d’être imprimeur. 1995, il immigre au Québec et installe son atelier à Montréal. 2007, il inaugure sa galerie attenante à son atelier. En 2011, il crée le Prix Atelier-Galerie A.Piroir avec la Biennale Internationale d’Estampe Contemporaine deTrois-Rivières. Au cours de sa carrier, il a collaboré avec de nombreux artistes de renommée international: Roy Lichtenstein, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Man Ray, Max Ernst, Hans Bellmer, Zao Wou-ki, Roberto Sébastien Matta, Francis Bacon, René Laubiès, Francine Simonin, Gilles Juneau, Ed Pien, Harold Kunder, John Heward et Marc Séguin…

biography

Originally a painter, Lucie Jolicoeur Côté has been dedicated to engraving since 1990.

She explores the medium at the Saidye Bronfman Centre and Atelier Circulaire in Montreal, where she has her studio. In 1992, she participated in a training course on etching at the Accademia Raffaello, in Urbino, Italy.

A member of both ARPRIM and Atelier Circulaire since 1991, she exhibits in solo as well as group shows both in Canada and internationally. La Bibliothèque nationale du Québec, le Conseil des arts de la ville de Montréal, and several companies including National Bank, Bank of Montreal, Gaz Métropolitain, Hydro-Québec, Loto-Québec and Ernst & Young are among her collectors.

biography

In1972 I began as an apprentice printmaker at La Guilde Graphique in Montreal. While there, the son of James Houston, the founder of the printmaking workshop in Cape Dorset, NWT, approached me to work as a printer/printmaker in the North. I didn't feel ready and so declined but the idea of working with the Inuit in the arts stayed with me. After years of persevering I got a chance in '94 to work in Cape Dorset at the behest of Terry Ryan, who at that time was the manager of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-op. It was a highlight of my career and it was an exhilarating experience to work face to face with some of the most renowned artists of our time. It felt like a 'coming out'!

But for all this, I had the sense that other Inuit communities were not being heard. So in 1999 I applied for and received funding from the Canadian Government's Millenium Fund to undertake a series of workshops in eight communities throughout the Territory of Nunavut. It became a personal 'walkabout' with the experience being both challenging and intense. I met some incredible people along the way, both young and old, whom I will forever hold dear.

exposition They Live

Pour Pierre Durette la notion de civilisation est un élément fondamental dans sa recherche artistique. Il a été longtemps inspiré par les encyclopédies qui renferment les connaissances acquises par les sociétés à une époque précise. Durant les dernières années, il a approfondi ses recherches autour des idées de l’archivage, de l’histoire et de la mémoire. L’idée de l’encyclopédie a fait son chemin et son travail actuel rappelle les capsules temporelles où une sélection d’artéfacts est rassemblée pour un futur indéterminé.

L’exposition They live présentée à l’Atelier-Galerie Alain Piroir regroupe un corpus d’œuvres réalisé dernièrement lors de résidences en arts d’impression. Elles se veulent une incursion dans un univers iconographique où chaque oeuvre peut être à la fois un objet de culte et une nomenclature d’une société présente, mais lointaine. La conquête de Mars est le motif de cette production visuel. Il en découle un questionnement sur la pérennité de nos civilisations. L’exposition nous propose la vision d’une nouvelle terre promise tout en faisant ressortir le côté primitif de la fuite et du fantasme. Ce qui semble être à première vue des fictions visuelles se retrouve à la limite entre un passé fragmenté et un futur anticipé.


Bio abrégée


Originaire de Causapscal dans la vallée de la Matapédia. Pierre Durette vit et travaille à Montréal depuis 2002. En 2006, il obtient un Baccalauréat en arts visuels et médiatiques à l’UQAM. Semi-finaliste au concours de peinture RBC en 2009, il est récipiendaire de plusieurs prix et bourses durant sa carrière. II remporta entre autres; le Grand Prix Albert-Dumouchel, la bourse d’excellence Marcel Bellerive et la 3e place lors des 7e jeux de la francophonie à Nice en 2013. Ses œuvres ont été exposées au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, à la galerie The Power Plant à LE gallery à Toronto à Cuadro art gallery à Dubaï, ainsi que dans plusieurs centres d’artistes au Québec. Son travail fait partie de plusieurs collections tant privées que publiques à travers le Canada et à l’étranger.

Biography


Albert Dumouchel, painter, printmaker, teacher.
He was born at Salabery de Valleyfield April 15 1916.
He died at Saint-Antoine-sur-le-Richelieu January 17 1971.

Self thaught artist, he studied the basics of etching with James Lowe in Valleyfield. He will later work with the best Paris printers such as Leblanc and Desjobert.

He will first teach drawing at the Valleyfield Seminaire from 1936 to 1949 then drawing and engraving at l’École des arts graphiques de Montréal from 1942 to 1960.

In Montréal in 1945, he participated in the "cadavres exquis" experiments with Léon Bellefleur, Jean Benoit, Jean Léonard, Mimi Parent and Alfred Pellan, and, in 1947 and 1949, published 2 famous issues of Les Ateliers d'arts graphiques, the review of Montréal's École des arts graphiques. In 1948 he joined the free-art "Prisme d'yeux" group and later made contributions to the first publications of Roland Giguère's Éditions Erta. Between 1949 and 1954, his lithographs illustrated Giguère's Faire naître, Les Nuits abat-jour and Les Armes blanches. Giguère interested Dumouchel in the Cobra movement, and his

work appeared in the Revue internationale de l'art expérimental - Cobra (1954), and in Phases de l'art contemporain (1955), the review published by poet and surrealist critic Édouard Jaguer.

His work as an art teacher at the École des arts graphiques and the École des beaux-arts in Montréal until his death influenced several generations of artists. The Montréal Musée d'art contemporain held an exhibition of his engravings in 1974.

His works are in the greatest art collections as well in Canada as abroad.

This series of work aims to look at the unseen or overlooked. Shadows and reflections on pavement after rain are one example of images that are around us but that we do not always see. Our choice to focus on one thing over another is fascinating to me. The question of how we choose where to look and what to look at is a focus of this work.

In the works ‘weather series’ Canadian weather maps are integrated into cloud formations. These formations show the highs, lows, and patterns of weather systems as well as explore the unseen elements at play in the sky. These works question how we experience our natural environments; how we hope to predict and understand the powers they hold.

It is with great pleasure that the Atelier-Galerie A.Piroir invites Nancy Lambert, a current printmaking artist, for an artist residency followed by a solo exhibition.

Mme Lambert has been selected amongst the recipients of the BIEC’s (International biennale of contemporary arts in Trois Rivières) Grand Prize, the Banque Nationale Groupe Final Prize, the Prix Télé-Québec as well as from the nominees for honorable mention. The solo exhibit at the Atelier-galerie A.Piroir. Furthermore, Mme Lambert will be offered an artist residency beginning April 25, 2014, thus allowing the Montreal public the opportunity to discover a larger body of work from this artist.

In the past few years, her printmaking has included an integration of digital photographic means with traditional etching techniques, has inspired the AGAP. Her marriage of various techniques is precisely in line with the Atelier-Galerie A.Piroir’s mandate to promote contemporary printmakers.

I’m always looking for small things which noone else has noticed, which are hidden, invisible or unknown. I gather, examine, organise. I play with the appearances which have presented themselves to me and my pleasure is to bring them to the light of day. If the occasion presents itself, I tell their stories. Often, therefore, my work includes words, as text, as poetry, as title.

In the past few years, my printmaking has included an integration of digital photographic means with traditional etching techniques. This particular combination, to some extent, allows me to present the sensation of being immersed in a world which is rapidly moving all around me. I feel confronted by the its immense richness and also its inscrutability. The possibility of rapidly gathering numerous snapshots of any given subject gives me the impression of being able to more adequately participate in the « reality » at hand. Success is always short-lived and partial at best. Probably it is the futility of trying to bear witness to anything in the world that motivates me to continue. So, the changing apparences hold me on the path of trial and error and the restrictive means of metal, varnish, ink and paper keep me rooted in the studio.

The suite « Social Media : Out of the Box », of which seven etching have been shown at the BIETR 2013, tells about the many - faceted interface between the artwork and its public. For the art aficionado, it is lends itself to humorous interpretation.
The series of etchings I intend to work on during the AGAP residency in 2014 will be the continuation of a theme which first presented itself to me in 1964. Two boys searching for clams drew me into a magical moment and a black and white photograph resulted. Since then, the subject of people at the beach has become a collection of unfinished sketches which I have always looked for an opportunity to continue. The series is tentatively called « Life is a Dream » because my grasp of the dichotomy « consciousness – unconsciousness » gives prescience to the unconscious as a guiding force and this series of images could allow me to present, in a playful way, some mythic characters under a contemporary sky.

biography

Nancy Lambert studied printmaking at L’école des beaux-arts in the studio of Albert Dumouchel and later went on to work with several printmaking techniques in the studio of Yves Gaucher at Sir George Williams University. Following this she was a printmaker at Pierre Ayot’s studio, GRAFF. She holds a Master’s degree in Art Education and a PhD in philosophy from Concordia University. Now retired from the Université de Montréal where she was a Professor of art education for thirty years, she pursues her interest in printmaking and contributes regularly to local and international events and exhibitions.

My practice as an etcher and a printmaker allows me, to some extent, to give form to the sensation of being in a rapidly moving world which confronts me with its immense richness and also with its inscrutability. Thus, it is the appearances of the world which hold me to the path of trial and error and the restrictive means of metal, varnish, ink and paper which keep me rooted within the studio.

Par le biais du dessin et de l’art imprimé, je m’amuse à explorer différents traitements picturaux et spatiaux. Mon travail s’effectue de façon spontanée; les images se construisent progressivement, parfois avec l’amalgame des techniques utilisées et les accidents qui surviennent. Ces imprévus font parties intégrantes de mon processus car ils m’obligent à analyser constamment ce qui se propose, à jouer/déjouer. Je trace, imprime, découpe, accumule, juxtapose, multiplie et colore.

Mon environnement au quotidien est une prémices à ma pratique: les espaces, un mot, un objet, les gens, les sentiments, une tache sur un bout de papier, un motif ou une couleur sont autant d’éléments qui stimulent mes perceptions. Un ton ludique et loufoque prédomine dans mon travail. Je redéfini, réorganise, dénature et réinterprète.

bio abrégée

Andréanne Bouchard est originaire de Causapscal, petit village situé au cœur de la Vallée de la Matapédia. Bachelière en Arts visuels et médiatiques, sa pratique se défini à travers l’art imprimé, le dessin et le collage. Son travail a été présenté en 2013 lors de La Biennale internationale d’estampe contemporaine de Trois-Rivières. En 2012, une exposition solo, réalisée au Centre Elgar de L’île des Sœurs intitulée Chez-toi, chez-moi, quelque part, répertoriait un ensemble d’œuvres inspirées des lieux habités par l’artiste. Tout récemment elle proposait Champ de cornets, installation participative réalisée à Arprim lors de la Nuit Blanche à Montréal. Intéressée autant par l’œuvre picturale que par une approche plus démocratisée de l’édition, elle poursuit sa production en art imprimé à l’Atelier Graff depuis 2005.

Guillaume Brisson-Darveau uses silk screening, video, sculpture and installations to create colorful and playful works that also draw on the absurdities of western culture. Using found material as a starting point he transforms whatever he finds into motorized engines, disproportionate candy, missiles, and other objects all united by an esthetic inspired by video games. By aggrandizing these found objects, the artist is able to void them of their original meaning, evoking instead society’s interest and desire for overabundance, capitalism, and excess in the face of ever growing inequalities.

“La Méta-Guerre des étoiles” is composed of a series of prints referring to a child’s imagined world of his own immune system in peril. These prints show the imagined white blood cells as a powerful space army combating the intruder.

Biography

Guillaume Brisson-Darveau lives in Montreal and obtained a Masters of Fine Arts from Laval University in 2009. In January of this year he collaborated with Pascaline Knight on the project Le Grand Dérangement/The Big Clean-Up at Open Studio in Toronto. Later this year, he will also be showing solo works while doing a residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium thanks to the support of the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres of Quebec.

biography

George Visat first becomes aware of printamaking at the age of 14 when he becomes an apprentice to the revered Leon Isidore in Paris. A few years later he is linked to the surrealist movement, with whom he will work very closely all of his life. Considered one of the greatest and most influencial printers of the 20th century, Visat formed close friendship with important artists. One of his closest relationship was to the artist Max Ernst whom he initiated in the various techniques of printmaking, accompanying him throughout his career.

Other notable artists that collaborated closely with Visat are Roberto Matta, Braque, Chagall, Miro, Leger, Giacometti, Man Ray, Bellmer, Magritte, Tanning, and Francis Bacon.

George Visat is also known to have printed many artists books including the 1988 "Voyages extra-terrestres d'un naïf"

If the object I am observing is relatively small, I may not observe it without disturbing it. Am I observing the object? Or the result of the disturbance my observation has on the object? since our thoughts are invisible to the naked eye, how do they affect our relationship with reality in everyday life? How do the notions of reality, matter and consciousness collaborate in this context? The link between time and space becomes elastic. Objective reality starts to curve. If our thoughts are invisible to the naked eyeIf our, how do they affect our relation to reality in everyday life? Consciousness, language and matter bifurcate.I rely on this bifurcation as I observe the continuous flow of one instant adding itself to another.I cut up words and images and by the process of collage, let another possibe meaning emerge.

Artist’s Statement

In the work that I create, the surfaces, forms, colors, details, and lack thereof simultaneously invite exploration while inhibiting preconceived perceptions and interpretations. While unable to recognize and interpret the objects or even the spaces that are presented correctly, a hypersensitivity of limitations and desires arises that, I believe, parallels our everyday experiences of the real and the imaginary. Significance, in whatever form it may reveal itself, lies neither in the real or the imagined, but somewhere in between. It is in the space between things, where reason, perception, and imagination meet, that we can discover a realm in which the fascinating, the mysterious, and the limitless can be experienced concurrently: a transcendental space.

Hélène Latulippe was born in Quebec. She lives and works in Montreal. She studied at the CEGEP du Vieux-Montréal (Industrial Design) and at Concordia University in Montreal (Bachelor of Fine Arts).

Her work sheds light on Man’s passage. Hunting down remnants of memory, she reshapes them, reorganizes them to bring an emotion to the surface with which the viewer can identify. Responding to her own attraction to materials, big formats and her love for leaving marks, she molds her vocabulary after a simple shape, a solid color and a process based on the repetition of gesture.

Biography

Joani Tremblay was born in Montreal,Canada. From a young age, she showeda keen interest in art and design. Afterstudying graphic design she took on abachelor’s degree in visual art at l’uqam in Montreal. In her recent work, she began a research path towards the understanding of the concept of repetition with a significant amount of delicate toiling with the intent of attaining a more simplified composition approaching abstraction. These pieces, created in method resembling that of nature will result in images comparable to biomorphic forms, topographical mapping and even cellular structures.

Nathalie Ampleman explores alternative photographic printmaking techniques such as cyanotype and gum bichromate. Her imagery reveals the impermanence of meetings between the environment, the animal kingdom and human kind. Her works are allegories to our world, symbolized by the use of artistic references as well as her creative process.

My work explores the etiology behind neurological disorders that affect motor coordination required to perform daily, sometimes simplistic, activities. I am specifically interested in the genetic disorder ‘essential tremor’ a condition that impairs fine motor movement most commonly noticed in the hands. My interest in the study of ‘essential tremor’ relates directly to my family. There is a great deal of uncertainty with regard to the cause or set of causes that surround the condition. To measure ‘tremor’ severity, individuals are sometimes assessed by the evaluation of drawing and handwriting samples under different conditions (i.e. drawing softly, rapidly, tracing or drawing freehand). I use these rudimentary tests for diagnosis as a way to explore the idea of the ‘tremor’ in my work.
